The method

How your number is worked out

Every step on this page is the same step the site takes. Put the same birthday in twice and you get the same chart twice. Nothing is hidden and nothing is guessed.

What this is

MatchMyNumber uses birth-date numerology, a traditional system that reduces a date of birth to single digits and reads those digits through the nine-square grid. The meanings attached to each number come from that tradition. The wording, and the way two charts are compared, is our own.

It is a structured framework for describing tendencies and how people tend to meet each other. It is not a laboratory measurement and it does not predict events.

Step 1: your core number

Your birthday is split into day, month and the two halves of the year. Each part is added up until it is a single digit. Those are added in pairs, then once more to give your core number.

Worked example: 14 / 09 / 1988

4
58
5917

Bottom row: day, month, first half of the year, second half of the year.

  1. Day 14 becomes 1 + 4 = 5. Month 09 stays 9.
  2. Year 1988 is split into 19 and 88. 1 + 9 = 10 becomes 1. 8 + 8 = 16 becomes 7.
  3. Second row: day and month, 5 + 9 = 14 becomes 5. Year halves, 1 + 7 = 8.
  4. Core number: 5 + 8 = 13 becomes 4.

Your core is built from two numbers: one from your day and month, one from your year. The report describes how those two shape it, so two people with the same core can read differently. That description is our own interpretation of the traditional number meanings. Numbers such as 11 and 22 are reduced to a single digit as well, so every person lands on 1 to 9.

Step 2: your birthday grid

Every digit of the full birth date is counted and placed on a three by three grid, the nine-square grid. Zeros are ignored. A lit square means that digit is in your birthday. A digit that appears twice or more is stronger. An empty square is a quality that comes less naturally.

Same example: digits 1, 4, 0, 9, 1, 9, 8, 8

369×2258×21×247

Two 1s, two 9s and two 8s are lit twice. The 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7 are empty.

Step 3: your lines

When all three numbers on a line of the grid are lit, that line is switched on. There are eight lines.

NumbersLine and meaning
3 · 6 · 9Mind line. Thinking, imagination and ideas
2 · 5 · 8Emotional line. Feeling, expression and relationships
1 · 4 · 7Practical line. Grounded action and the material side of life
1 · 2 · 3Planning line. Organising ideas into plans
4 · 5 · 6Willpower line. Will, persistence and follow-through
7 · 8 · 9Action line. Taking action and getting results
1 · 5 · 9Ambition line. Drive, goals and achievement
3 · 5 · 7Intuition line. Insight and inner knowing

Step 4: what is different about your chart

Two people with the same core number can have very different charts. We compare your grid against it. A doubled digit is called out, and so is a missing one, because those are where two people of the same number tend to differ. Each line in that section names the digit it comes from, so you can check it against your own birthday.

How two people are compared

For a pair, both grids are laid over each other. A number is covered if either person has it. A number is a shared gap if neither has it. A number that one person has twice and the other lacks is where friction tends to show. The result depends only on the two birthdays and the relationship you pick, and it is identical every time.

What this is, and what it is not

It is

  • A consistent, repeatable method
  • A way to describe tendencies and talk about them
  • Open about every step it takes

It is not

  • A scientific test or a prediction of events
  • Medical, legal or financial advice
  • A reason to make a major decision on its own

People are more than a date. Use the reading as a starting point for noticing patterns, and trust what you see in the people you know.
